Specify Whatever Size You Need

The easiest and most timesaving way possible to make your videos smaller!

Specify the output size by entering the target size directly! Plus, dragging is now shrinking thanks to VideoProc Converter AI's compression ratio slider. It lets you reduce a video to 10% (or any value between 10% and 100%) of its original size by easily dragging the slider.

A no-brainer way that can suit almost all your compression needs and is especially efficient for fitting your video within a size limit for social media and video share platforms like YouTube, TikTok, Discord, etc.

  1. Step 1. Import your footage.
  2. Step 2. Find Compress in the toolbox.
  3. Step 3. Enter the target size or drag the slider to set the compression ratio.
  4. Step 4. Reduce the resolution or change the video format as you need.
  5. Step 5. Click Done and hit RUN.

Re-encode or Transcode - Compress in One Click

Import

Export

Convert to reduce the video file size. Support videos from everywhere, like GoPro, DJI, 4K camcorders, screen records, and so on. Prevent quality degradation caused by auto-compressing of the video platform.

Re-encode MKV/MP4/AVI/MOV Videos

Re-encode a video in one click to get smaller file size. Just input your video, and click RUN to output the file without making any settings. VideoProc will compress the video for you with the advanced compression algorithm. For example, you can reduce the file size without changing the original H264 codec, which is compatible with more video apps and platforms.

Transcode to Highly Compressed HEVC

HEVC/H.265 is known for high coding efficiency and great compression ability. As a successor to AVC/H.264, HEVC offers better data compression at the same video quality. According to our test, converting H.264 to HEVC in VideoProc Converter AI can save about 90% file size without a perceptible quality change.

Increase GOP Length - No Perceptibly Quality Loss

Best for low-motion videos, also optimized for high-motion videos!

A much longer GOP length will compress a video more efficiently, especially for low-motion or more static videos with little frame changes. Increasing the GOP length can provide higher video quality at lower bitrates. But if your footage is shot at high frame rates, high speed, or has complex subject, you can also try to adjust the GOP length slightly to get a smaller file size.

Adjust the GOP length value in VideoProc Converter AI to get up to 90% small file size.
Import a video -> choose an output format -> go to Option -> find GOP and set the value:
  • For low-motion video: set the GOP value between 90 and 250 generally.
  • For sports or high-motion video: set the GOP value to 30-60 generally.
  • For further editing: set the GOP value to 30 generally.

More Useful Methods

Lower Frame Rate. Theologically, higher frame rates lead to a smoother video experience. However, if there's little action happening in the video, like in a podcast, webinar, or DJI shot, reducing the frame rate can shrink the file size without noticeable quality loss.

Reduce Bitrate. A higher bitrate generally means a larger size and better quality because more data is uploaded per second. However, there is a point of diminishing returns where further increases in bitrate do not improve perceived quality.

Downscale Resolution. The video quality improves with higher resolution, as it provides more pixels with color and luminance info. but this comes at the cost of a larger file size. Luckily, the differences between 1080P and 4K or 1080P and 720P video are not particularly noticeable on small-screen devices such as iPhones.

Adjust Audio. The majority of people tend to watch videos on social media with the sound muted. Try removing the audio or adjusting the audio bitrate/sample rate/channel to make your video smaller.

Tips If you are not satisfied with the quality of a video compressed in an editing application, you can try exporting the edited file in an intermediate code and then compressing it with VideoProc Converter AI.
ADDITIONAL WAYS

Make Video Smaller

Cut off Unwanted Clips
Cut and remove the unusable segments in a video. Shorten the video to reduce the final file size while keeping the original video/audio quality.
Split Long Video into Pieces
Many UGC sites have restrictions on the uploaded file length. If your video is long, you can split it into parts to export and upload them separately.
Crop and Resize
Crop the frame size of a video to remove an unwanted area to save size. You can keep the original aspect ratio or resize the video image to fit a different screen or platform.
Convert 4K to 1080p/2K
4K is a big workload for computing, editing, and uploading. Compressing 4K to 2K/1080p/720p will reduce the file size greatly. The quality is fine if played back on a smaller screen.
Video to GIF
Adding a GIF instead of a video as an attachment is friendly for Email sending. Changing your video into an animated GIF will reduce the file size while making it fun.

Fix Video Playback Issues

Resolution Too High
High resolution, esp. 4K is power consumption. Only the latest hardware with faster write speeds can handle high-quality videos and modern formats. Lowering the resolution can make your high-resolution videos playable on any device without stutters.
Frame Rate Too High
There is an upper limit on the frame rate that a mobile phone or other device can support for playing a video. A 4K 120fps video, for example, needs extremely high decoding and playing ability. If you want to play a high-fps video on a low-end device, you should reduce the frame rate.
