Since its launch back in 2016, Instagram Live has been entertaining the masses. It's become a huge part of the platform as celebrities use it to talk to their fans. Even more so throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, millions of people have turned to the app for live concerts, chats, and more.
If you're curious what the most viewed Instagram live is, you're not the only one. We're here to help as we'll be counting down who has the most views on Instagram live!
The Third Highest Instagram Live Views
Shortly after the pandemic began, Tory Lanez started his popular Quarantine Radio show on Instagram Live. The goal was simple - keep his fans entertained during the first few bizarre months of lockdown.
If you've somehow not heard of Lanez before, he's a successful Canadian rapper and singer who has peaked on the billboards for both singles and albums a couple of times.
The rapper isn't without his controversies. Most recently he's been accused of shooting Megan Thee Stallion in the foot. Before this, the rapper was embroiled in a row with fellow Canadian rapper Drake.
The two have dissed each other in various tracks and freestyles throughout the last decade. Which made it even more surprising when Drake appeared on Lanez's Instagram Live series.
He'd had various high-profile artists like Young Thug, Chris Brown, and Justin Bieber on Quarantine radio prior to Drake's appearance. But as expected from the most successful rap artist in the world, Drake drew in the crowds.
The stream happened on the 31st of March 2020. Prior to Drake joining the live, the Quarantine Radio show had 140,000 viewers. This exploded on Drake joining, shooting up to 300,000 viewers which was the most IG live views at the time.
The two joked about Drake spending time with Kevin Durant, who tested positive for coronavirus at that time. They also celebrated hitting 300,000 viewers during the stream.
The Second Highest Instagram Live Views
Though it was an impressive feat, this record for most views on Instagram live didn't last long. On the 8th of May 2020, Tekashi 6ix9ine broke this record again.
Tekashi 6ix9ine, or Daniel Hernandez to his parents, is an American rapper. Much like Lanez, he's not without his controversies.
The 24-year-old hit the big time in 2017 with his debut single Gummo. He became known for his rainbow-colored hair and grills, as well as his facial tattoos. He also appeared in the headlines regularly due to many controversies.
These controversies were varied. His own personal controversies included charges over involving a child in a sexual performance, choking a minor, domestic violence, and sexual assault allegations.
Tekashi 69 History
However, many of these controversies were related to the rapper being involved with New York Gang, Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods.
In February 2019, he faced a total of nine charges against him relating to his gang involvement. The charges included conspiracy to commit murder and armed robbery.
The rapper agreed to a plea deal with the prosecution. He pleaded guilty but was sentenced to only two years in prison as he testified for the prosecution for other gang member trials.
Tekashi 69 left prison in April 2020 early due to concerns over prison conditions in the pandemic as he has severe asthma. While under house arrest, he went on Instagram Live to chat to fans about the prison sentence and his release.
As you can imagine from such a controversial figure, the live stream exploded in popularity. It hit a colossal 2 million views making it the most viewed live on Instagram 2020 at the time.
In the stream, he brags about jewelry like his necklace and watch. He also says he's sick of people saying him snitching means his career is over. He rants about how the gang wasn't loyal to him so why would he be loyal to them.
Despite his continued controversies with Meek Mill, 50 Cent, and Future, the rapper's record didn't last long.
So who does have the most live views on Instagram?
The Most Viewed Instagram Live
Only a couple of weeks after Tekashi 69's live stream on the 25th of May 2020, someone else broke the record… and you might have never heard of him.
Acun Ilicali now holds the record for the most-viewed Instagram Live, with a colossal 3 million viewers. That puts him ahead of Tekashi's record by a cool million viewers.
If you've never heard of Ilicali, don't worry. We've got all the information you need.
Acun Ilicali is a Turkish TV star and producer. Though he might not be in the headlines as much in the Western world, he's pretty big news in his homeland Turkey. He owns two television channels there, TV8 and TV8.5.
He started as a sports reporter before building his media empire. At 51 years old, he now owns production companies across the world.
The live stream in question was to do with one of the many shows he produces for his channels — Survivor 2020.
This show is a reality TV show, of sorts. Contestants are taken to a remote location and must - you guessed it - survive. They are split into two teams to face a variety of challenges, as well as needing to source their own food, water, and shelter.
Each week a contestant is eliminated and removed from the location. The final contestant wins a lump sum of cash for making it through the show.
On the 25th of May, the two camps were battling for immunity from elimination. As so many contestants had left the show already, this would be the last week the two camps battled it out.
The show went live on Instagram to reveal the date the two camps would be united to one. This is the stream that broke the live record.
