SSD vs HDD: Which Should You Have?
Computer is commonly equipped with Hard Disk Drive (HDD), with the progress of science and technology, however, Solid State Disks (SSD) emerged, showing a tendency to replace ordinary hard disks. Then, how do you make a screw decision from them? What are the differences between them? Which one performs better for video editing to be honest?

SSD and HDD are constructed entirely differently. The former one allows faster start-up of disk, and there is no process of motor accelerating rotation. The biggest advantage of SSD is that it doesn't generate tracing time. It is a common dive letter which can be used as a storage medium, in the operating system. Due to the fact that Flash storage medium is used, mechanical structure doesn't exit in SSD, which results in no data searching time, delaying time and tracing time. Therefore, SSD performs better in the speed of the start-up of video editing software and file generation such as index catalog preview. In another word, outputting video files from or inputting video files into an SSD runs faster than an HDD.

However, SSD does not exceed HDD in all the aspects. SSD is disadvantageous in life span and price. Frequent data reading will accelerate the breakdown of SSD. Generally, flash memory can be written 10,000 to 100,000 times, and the specially designed can be up to 1,000 to 5,000,000 times. However, some parts of the file system (such as file allocation tables) will still be beyond this limit during the lifetime of the computer. In addition, the price per unit capacity of SSD is 5 to 10 times that of traditional hard disk (based on flash memory), or even 200 to 300 times (based on DRAM). But for now, the price disparity is not as great as it used to be.
Thus, comprehensive consideration must be done when it comes to the editing of large video such as 4K and 8K. Users may place system and software on SSD, the video to be processed on HDD, with both performance and price being taken into account.
Of course, factors that impose influences on the speed or smoothness of video editing aren’t limited to hard disks. Other factors such as CPU, GPU and video editing software itself will also be a causing factor.
Theoretically, SSD works better on video editing. It takes less reading time and processes data-reading more smoothly. Practically, given the cost, life span and other conditions, the combination of SSD and HDD is most recommended choice for you.
